Nitrous During Dental Procedures
What Is Nitrous Oxide?
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is a safe and effective sedative that has been used in dentistry for over a century. It is an odorless, colorless gas that is mixed with oxygen and delivered through a small mask placed over your nose. Nitrous oxide helps you relax during dental procedures while remaining fully conscious and able to communicate with your dental team.
What to Expect
When you arrive for your appointment, a small mask will be placed comfortably over your nose. Within minutes, you will begin to feel the calming effects of the gas. You may notice a pleasant tingling sensation in your hands and feet, a feeling of warmth, and a general sense of well-being.
- Rapid onset - The sedative effects begin within two to three minutes of breathing through the mask
- Adjustable sedation level - Your dentist can increase or decrease the concentration of nitrous oxide throughout your procedure to keep you at the ideal comfort level
- Remain conscious - You stay awake and aware during the entire procedure, able to respond to instructions and communicate any concerns
- Quick recovery - Once the mask is removed and you breathe normal oxygen for a few minutes, the effects wear off almost immediately, allowing you to drive yourself home and resume your day
Benefits of Nitrous Oxide Sedation
- Anxiety reduction - Ideal for patients who experience dental anxiety or nervousness, helping you feel calm and at ease from start to finish
- Rapid onset and offset - Unlike oral sedation or IV sedation, nitrous oxide takes effect in minutes and wears off just as quickly, with no lingering grogginess
- Conscious sedation - You remain fully aware during treatment, which means no recovery time and no need for a driver to take you home afterward
- Suppresses gag reflex - For patients with a sensitive gag reflex, nitrous oxide can make dental procedures significantly more comfortable and manageable
- Safe for most patients - Nitrous oxide has an excellent safety record and can be used for both children and adults across a wide range of dental treatments
